Two Nights Under Oklahoma Stars — Group Camping at Kaw Lake
The full group camping experience — arrive Friday, fish all day Saturday, hike Eagle View Trail, and end Sunday with a fresh fish fry. Kaw Lake's USACE campgrounds are made for exactly this.
Current Conditions Note
Fall camping (September–October) offers the best combination of weather and fishing. Summer camping requires extra insect protection and earlier wake-up times to beat the heat. Winter camping is possible but most sites reduce services.
Your Itinerary
- 1
Set up camp at Osage Cove or Coon Creek
Osage Cove has 97 electric sites and is the best option for groups. Coon Creek Cove is more primitive but more scenic. Reserve at Recreation.gov — fall weekends go fast. Set up before dark and get the group oriented.
Tip: Assign tasks — fire wood, site setup, meal prep — before arrival so you're not scrambling at dusk.
- 2
Group dinner and campfire
Keep it simple — foil packets, hotdogs, or a big pot of chili cooked at home and reheated. The campfire is the main event on night one. Bring extra wood — USACE areas don't allow gathering from the surrounding land.
- 3
Dawn fishing — boats and bank
Split into boats and bank anglers. Boat anglers target deep timber crappie at first light; bank anglers set lines at the cove point for channel catfish. This is the best fishing window of the entire trip.
Tip: Oklahoma requires a fishing license for all anglers 16+. Day licenses available online or at Walmart.
