Paddle, Hike & Spot Eagles — Kaw Lake Adventure Circuit
The full outdoor circuit — kayak the quiet upper arms at dawn, hike Eagle View Trail in the morning, hunt for bald eagles at the dam in the afternoon, and finish with sunset from the overlook. A 12-hour day that covers everything Kaw Lake does best.
Current Conditions Note
This itinerary is best from mid-September through March when eagle numbers build and temperatures are comfortable for hiking. Summer version: swap the afternoon eagle watch for bass fishing from kayaks and skip the hike midday. Check wind forecast — wind above 15 mph makes open-water paddling uncomfortable.
Your Itinerary
- 1
Dawn kayak — upper lake arms near Kaw City
Put in at the Kaw City area boat access and paddle the sheltered upper arms of the lake before wind picks up. This part of the lake sees less motorboat traffic and more wildlife — great blue herons, wood ducks, osprey, and deer along the bank are common before 8 AM.
Tip: Bring dry bags for gear — October mornings can be cold on the water and wind comes up by 9 AM.
- 2
Transition to Eagle View Trail
Drive 20 minutes from Kaw City area to the Eagle View trailhead near the dam. The trail opens through cross-timbers woodland and has intermittent lake views. The full loop is 12 miles; most groups do the northern 6-mile section.
Tip: Tick prevention is essential — permethrin on clothing before the trip, DEET on skin at the trailhead.
- 3
Trailhead lunch break
Eat at the trailhead picnic area before driving to the dam. A solid meal before the afternoon section keeps energy up.
