Late Summer at Kaw Lake — Catfish Nights & Quiet Coves
August at Kaw Lake means peak catfish, scorching afternoons best spent in the coves, and some of the best night fishing of the year. Here's how to make the most of it.
Current Conditions Note
This itinerary is designed for July–August peak summer. Catfish peak through September. Watch the heat index — when it hits 105°F, skip the afternoon paddle and stay in shade. Check Conditions for current lake level; summer drawdowns occasionally affect boat ramp access.
Your Itinerary
- 1
Dawn bass — shaded coves before the heat
August mornings start cool and that window closes fast. Target bass in shaded coves on the north faces of the lake arms — they'll be in the shallows in early light and push deeper by 9 AM. Topwater or shallow crank along rocky edges.
Tip: This is the best fishing of the day in August — don't skip the early start.
- 2
Swim break — sandy cove cool-down
Find a protected cove with a sandy entry and get in the water while temperatures are still manageable. Water is warmest at the surface; dive deeper for a slight cool. Early morning is clearest before boat traffic stirs the bottom.
- 3
Beat the midday heat
Pull the boat into a marina or return to camp. 11 AM to 3 PM in August is genuinely dangerous heat. Rest, eat, drink water, and nap. The lake will still be there.
Tip: Stay hydrated — sweat evaporates fast in Oklahoma heat and you don't always notice until it's too late. One liter of water per hour if you're active.
