Fall Lakeside Escape — Eagles, Crappie & Ponca City
A relaxing fall weekend for two — morning fishing in uncrowded coves, a stop at the Marland Mansion, campfire evenings, and some of the best eagle-watching in Oklahoma.
Current Conditions Note
Fall is the best season for a couples trip — campgrounds are quiet, fishing is excellent, and the eagles start returning in late October. Book the campsite on Recreation.gov 2–3 weeks ahead for fall weekends.
Your Itinerary
- 1
Arrive and set up camp
Check into Coon Creek Cove or Osage Cove Campground (reserve ahead on Recreation.gov). Fall weekends are significantly less crowded than summer. Set up camp before dark and take a short walk along the shore before dinner.
Tip: Arriving Friday avoids any weekend traffic and gives you the full Saturday on the lake.
- 2
Campfire and lakeside dinner
Grill at the campsite — keep it simple with foil packets or cast iron. After dinner, sit by the fire with drinks. October nights get genuinely cold; bring a heavier jacket than you think you need.
- 3
Sunrise paddle
Rent kayaks from Hideaway Marina or bring your own. Paddle the quiet coves in the early morning when the water is glassy and boat traffic is zero. Great blue herons, belted kingfishers, and early-returning bald eagles are often visible from the water.
Tip: This is the best 90 minutes of a Kaw Lake weekend — don't sleep through it.
