Dawn to Dusk Fishing — Crappie, Bass & Summer Catfish
Hit the peak summer fishing window with a structured plan — crappie at first light, bass from mid-morning, then a long evening anchored for channel catfish. One of Oklahoma's best all-day fishing lakes.
Current Conditions Note
Summer catfish are best June–September. Crappie peak in early spring (March–April) and again in fall, but summer fishing in timber is consistently productive. Check the Conditions page for current lake level — a rising lake typically improves fishing.
Your Itinerary
1
Pre-dawn launch at Osage Cove
Launch before sunrise. The bass and crappie are most active in the first hour of light, and you'll beat the weekend boat traffic by a wide margin. Osage Cove's ramp is well-maintained and accessible.
Tip: Headlamp required. Bring your own bait — fishing supply stores in Ponca City open at 6 AM, but you'll want to be on the water before that.
2
Dawn crappie on deep timber
Head to the submerged timber lines in 15–22 feet of water. Crappie stack on timber in summer, especially in the early morning before water warms. Small tube jigs (1/16 oz, pink/white or green/chartreuse) dropped vertically are the most consistent producers.
Tip: Use a fish finder if you have one — look for suspended fish at 12–18 feet. Match the exact depth where they're holding.
3
Bass fishing along rocky points
As the sun gets up, crappie go deep and bass become more active. Target rocky points and channel intersections with crankbaits or swimbaits. The north arms of the lake near Kaw City have consistent bass structure.
Tip: Morning topwater can be excellent for bass in June — try a walking bait over rocky flats just after sunrise.

4
Rest and midday shade break
Pull into a shaded cove or head back to the marina. Fishing slows dramatically from 11 AM to 3 PM in summer. Eat your lunch, drink water, and rest. Hydration is serious business at 95°F.
5
Afternoon bass in shaded coves
As the sun drops, bass move back into the shallows on the shaded sides of coves. Spinnerbaits and plastic worms worked along rocky banks with tree cover produce well.
6
Anchor up for evening catfish
Find a channel ledge or deep flat near riprap and drop anchor. Cut shad on a slip sinker rig is the go-to for channel catfish. The dam tailwaters are also productive if water is being released. Fish until dark and enjoy the coolest part of the day.
Tip: Fresh-cut shad is the best bait. You can cast-net your own on the main lake or buy it from Hideaway Marina.
