A Full Kaw Lake Day for Under $30
Proof that the best things in life are nearly free. A complete lake day — swimming, bank fishing, and a full picnic spread — for an entire family under $30. No boat, no marina, no problem.
Current Conditions Note
Best on a weekday when parking is easy and lake access is uncrowded. Avoid Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends when day-use areas fill up. If you arrive at 8 AM you'll have the lake nearly to yourself.
Your Itinerary
- 1
Supply run ($10–15)
Walmart Supercenter, Ponca City. Sunscreen, drinks, a bag of ice for the cooler, sandwiches, chips, and a container of nightcrawlers from the sporting goods section. Everything you need is here for under $15. Pack it in the cooler before you leave the parking lot.
Tip: Oklahoma fishing licenses are also available at the Walmart sporting goods counter — $15 for a resident day license. Required for anyone 16+.
- 2
USACE Day-Use Area — free access
Most USACE day-use areas at Kaw Lake are free or $5 per vehicle. Osage Cove and Washunga Bay both have parking, restrooms, and direct lake access. No reservation required for day use outside peak holiday weekends.
Tip: Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends to get a shaded picnic table. By 10 AM the good spots are gone.
- 3
Bank fishing ($3 bait)
Set up rods at the rocky point near the day-use area. Simple hook-and-worm setup with a bobber. Channel catfish, crappie, and bass are all reachable from the bank. Kids under 16 fish free in Oklahoma with no license required.
Tip: No fancy gear needed — a $15 rod-and-reel combo from Walmart catches the same fish as a $200 setup from the bank.
